A Rapid City woman's good deed backfired when a woman she offered a ride to stole her car around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

The woman had driven to the Oasis Lounge at 711 Main St. to give her sister a ride home. It turned out the sister had also offered Dakota Gourd a ride, according to police spokeswoman Tarah Heupel.

When the car's owner and her sister went into the lounge to get a third passenger, Gourd, 31, jumped behind the wheel of the running car and took off.

Police found her near Fifth and St. Patrick streets a short time later. Gourd was arrested for grand theft, driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.

The theft was the second of the weekend involving cars left running, Heupel said.

On Friday evening, a driver left a car with a dog inside running outside the Fresh Start Convenience Store at 3275 Cambell Street.

The car and the dog were gone when the driver returned.

The car was later found in the Red Shirt area of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation by Oglala Sioux Tribe police.

Heupel did not know if the dog was still with the car.
