Ken Ashmore marked his 20 year dedication to fulfill his mother's final wish with his 1,000th church service on Sunday at the Crossroads Wesleyan Church on Sheridan Lake Road.

Congregation members hugged "Grandpa Ken" and shook the 78-year-old's hand before taking their places in the rows of wooden pews. Ashmore filled out the service program, as he does each Sunday, and wrote "#1000" on the cover.

Next to him sat Mike and Nicole Robeck. "He was always faithful," Mike Robeck said.

Pastor Wendell Jones made a surprise visit to congratulate Ashmore on his milestone. Jones was the pastor when Ashmore started attending church in 1993.

When asked what he would do now, Ashmore replied that he would continue to count his church attendance, but this time starting from the number one.
