A piece of haying equipment hit a rock Thursday afternoon and sparked a fire that burned nearly 160 acres near Midland, according to Reuben Vollmer, Midland Volunteer Fire Department fire chief.
There were no injuries or damage to structures, although flames charred fence posts and several power poles.
Firefighters and equipment from Midland, Philip and Haakon County battled flames in pastureland and rough terrain from 2:30 p.m. until about 5 p.m. A Haakon County plow bladed a fire break about a mile long around the fire to help contain the blaze.
