The traditional Ceremony of Remembrance of the Pearl Harbor attack will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Deadwood.

In the ceremony, participants raise a flag of a deceased military member from the area. This year's program will honor Belle Fourche veteran Glenn McFarland, who held local, state and district offices with the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Deadwood VFW Post 5969 and Homestake American Legion Post 31 from Lead have co-sponsored the Pearl Harbor memorial event since 1990. The ceremony recalls the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that plunged the United States into World War II, a day that President Franklin Roosevelt declared would forever "live in infamy."

Scheduled speakers Sunday include Deadwood Mayor Francis Toscana, Lead Mayor Tom Nelson, Post 5969 Commander Ky Caserio, Post 31 Commander Bev Hink, and area veterans Jerry Apa, Tom Blair and Jim Raysor. The Rev. Kerry Prendiville will deliver the invocation and benediction.

World War II Air Force veteran Rick Losey and The Good Time Singers will perform, and Lara Joseph of Lead-Deadwood High School will be one of the buglers playing the Echo Taps.

Those planning to attend the program will gather at the Deadwood VFW, 10 Pine St., at 10:30 a.m. for a ride to the cemetery. Afterward, participants can return to the post home for a luncheon served by the VFW Auxiliary.

If the weather is too cold or snowy, the ceremony will be shortened.

For more information, call 578-3180 or call Caserio at 722-9914.
