Rapid City businessman Chris Lien said he'll seek the Republican nomination for the U.S. House seat now held by Democrat Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.

Lien, 42, has a law degree and is president of Birdsall Sand and Gravel Co. of Rapid City, a division of Pete Lien & Sons.

He announced his candidacy Wednesday in a prepared statement.

His father, Charles Lien, unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in 1972.

Herseth Sandlin has indicated she will seek re-election but has not made a formal announcement.
