A fire early Thursday morning in a Spearfish housing development brought out more than two dozen firefighters and caused extensive damage to the home of Michael Kirby and his wife, in the Mountain Plains I area on the southeast side of the city.

According to fire chief Pat Kellogg, no one was injured in the fire; its cause was determined to be accidental.

Kellogg said about 30 fire fighters responded to the blaze from the Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department, along with water tenders from Belle Fourche, Deadwood and Whitewood.

The call came in at 3:40 a.m. It took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control, but most firefighters were on scene until about 7:30 a.m., Kellogg said.

The Kirbys were in the house when the fire started but escaped without injury.

The house is likely a total loss. "I think it will be, yes," Kellogg said. "It's not totally lost by fire, but with the smoke and heat and water damage. The upper story is pretty much gone."
