National Guard officers return from Afghan mission

Two South Dakota Army National Guard officers were scheduled to return home Monday night after spending a year in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Lt. Col. Les Wermers of Rapid City and Lt. Col. Douglas Quarve of Sioux Falls, deployed for one year as members of an embedded training team with the mission to train and mentor military leaders in the Afghan National Army. They served with the 218th enhanced Heavy Separate Brigade, South Carolina Army National Guard.

Both soldiers work full-time at Camp Rapid for the South Dakota National Guard. Wermers is a member of Rapid City's 109th Regional Support Group, and Quarve is a member of Joint Force Headquarters of Rapid City.
