Paint the Town to mark 15th year
By Journal staff
Paint the Town, the annual volunteer effort to help senior, disabled or low-income homeowners , marks its 15th anniversary. NeighborWorks Dakota Home Resource will celebrate the milestone this year during National NeighborWorks Week on June 6-13 with another round of helping.
The event has grown from humble beginnings. In June 1994, 25 volunteers painted one house in Deadwood. Over the past 15 years, more than 80 homes and more than 2,000 volunteers have dedicated time to the event.
Homes are now nominated and chosen by Neighborhood Councils in Central City, Deadwood, Edgemont and Lead and by Paint the Twon Committees in Hot Springs, Spearfish, Sturgis and Rapid City.
Paint for the event is sponsored by South Dakota Housing Development Authority's "Paint South Dakota" program and Deadwood Historic Preservation sponsors paint for an additional home in Deadwood.
