A Deadwood-based housing agency will use a $50,000 federal grant to help low-income households in the Northern Hills to rehabilitate their homes.

The nonprofit Neighborhood Housing Services of the Black Hills will use the funds to help with replacement of roofs, stairs, electrical wiring, foundation or structural repair, and heating systems.

"This program will assist us in fulfilling our mission of neighborhood revitalization, house by house, block by block," executive director Joy McCracken said.

The USDA Rural Development program also can provide funds to rental property owners and cooperatives to help with repairs and rehabilitation of their units if they are made available to low-income residents.
