Rosebud Indian Reservation residents and others will call attention to the high rate of recent suicide attempts during an awareness program Thursday, June 19.

The suicide rate among Native Americans in the Great Plains states is 10 times higher than the national average, according to a news release. During a six-month period, 144 people attempted suicide on the Rosebud reservation.

The Lakota Journey - a faith-based missions organization - and area residents will stage a Walk for Life, or Wiconi Walk, starting at 10 a.m. June 19 at the tribal headquarters in Rosebud. Walkers will head to Ghost Hawk Park a few miles outside of Rosebud for a program and lunch.
