RAPID CITY - Students in the Rapid City School District will not make up the school day missed when bad weather closed schools Feb. 16.

For students, the final day of school will be Friday, June 1, as originally scheduled and not Monday, June 4.

During its meeting Thursday, the school board approved an agreement with teachers sparing students from the extra day in the classroom.

Teachers will work a full day June 4. They have the option of working that evening or June 5 or June 6 to fulfill the last half-day of their contract.

The school board on Thursday recognized the hard work and dedication of 40 retiring employees. A reception for retiring staff members was held before the meeting, and employees were introduced during the meeting.

In all, the employees honored contributed 916 years of service with the school district.

The school board also made time Thursday to salute the volunteers whose contributions to the Pennington County Truancy Court program support children and education.

Seventh Circuit Judge Merton Tice, Central High School assistant principal Michael Murphey and Dexter Wittman, from Juvenile Diversion, each received the school district's Starfish Award.
