The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded $420,000 to South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City for research of high-efficiency solar energy technologies.

In announcing the grant, Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., said the research could lead to breakthroughs that would make solar power an even larger source of energy for the country.
