Editor's Note: This is the first in a series of stories about the United Way and its efforts to raise funds for community needs.
RAPID CITY - Each spring, United Way brings together community leaders - judges, law enforcement officers, school officials and key people from nonprofits - to talk about the key issues facing our communities.
This year's listening sessions revealed a growing need for the basics: food, affordable housing, clothing, transportation.
United Way agencies work together to meet those needs and more, providing thousands of meals, companionship, and a place to gather for the elderly; positive activities and nutritious meals for our youth; free prescriptions to those who have to choose between food and medication; counseling for families in crisis and those battling addictions; emergency assistance with food, rent, utilities and clothing to those who need help the most; emergency shelter for victims of violence.
Those agencies are on the front lines of a battle to make our community healthier and safer. Our goal this year represents what our agencies need to continue to provide the level of assistance they have in the past. Increasing fuel costs alone make that job more difficult.
With our community's growing needs, your gift is more important than ever. Please give generously. Together, we can achieve results that no one can accomplish alone.
