A Rapid City man is accused of stealing hundreds of dollars from the cash register while working in a ticket booth at Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Spencer R. Brink, 19, pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court to a charge of larceny, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine upon conviction.

According to federal court documents, Brink's supervisor told National Park Service rangers he suspected two employees were stealing money from the registers. Park rangers stated in court documents that security camera recordings from last May showed Brink taking $10 payments from incoming vehicles, then falsifying records to say that those cars turned around and left instead of entering the park. Brink then allegedly pocketed the money.

Investigators estimated the loss at $1,125. According to court documents, Brink later told a park ranger that he took "approximately $200" from the cash register to pay his rent.

Brink was released on bond pending trial.
