Rapid City council members Monday night will have an opportunity to override Mayor Alan Hanks' veto of a perpetual 3 percent salary increase.
The council meets at 7 p.m. at the City/School Administration Center, 300 Sixth St. The meeting is open to the public.
Hanks said he exercised the veto to staunch needless controversy over pay increases since salaries are discussed each year during preparation of the city's budget.
The veto will not affect 2008 salaries. The mayor will make a maximum of $95,046 next year, and council members will get $13,113.
Also on the agenda:
* Discussion of replacing a block of sewer line east of Mount Rushmore Road between Franklin and St. Cloud streets. City council members were divided four weeks ago about whether to declare an emergency and replace the line at city expense - which could cost about $130,000 - or review other options and explore the possibility of sharing the cost with homeowners.
According to a notation on old city plat documents, the sewer line was installed in 1928 as a privately maintained line, something current property owners did not realize. The issue sparked a debate about whether the city should take responsibility for other old lines that records indicate were originally built as private lines.
* Quotes and contract for inspection services associated with Rapid Construction, a local contractor caught by city inspectors installing old water pipe at a job site.
The council fined Rapid Construction $10,000 and ordered inspections of all the company's water and sewer-line work over the next year.
Initially, the city's trenching board revoked Rapid Construction's license for a year because of the violation, but the company agreed to a reduced penalty to get its license reinstated.
