A Belle Fourche man remained in critical condition Friday after his attempt to elude officers in parts of two states ended in a collision Wednesday in North Dakota.
Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere said Travis Peters, 30, failed to appear Tuesday night for drug and alcohol testing with the 24/7 sobriety program conducted at the Belle Fourche sheriff's office. Authorities say he violated the terms of his probation by failing to appear for that test.
On Wednesday morning, Peters was reportedly seen "driving illegally and recklessly" on U.S. Highway 85 north of Belle Fourche, the sheriff said.
Law enforcement dispatchers alerted the South Dakota Highway Patrol and Harding County sheriff's office. Lamphere said a Harding County officer soon spotted Peters speeding north.
The sheriff said Peters then headed east on Highway 20, turned around and "and came back toward the Harding County sheriff's unit westbound to Highway 85."
The chase turned north again, and Peters drove through Buffalo "at a high rate of speed."
Harding County notified North Dakota authorities. Bowman County sheriff's officials failed in attempting to stop Peters close to the state line. Officers in Bowman placed a strip of tire spikes across the highway south of town, but Peters allegedly drove into the ditch to avoid the spikes and then steered back onto the road.
"Peters went around the spikes at a high rate of speed and continued north until he collided with a southbound vehicle," Lamphere said.
Two people in the other vehicle were injured and taken to a Bismarck, N.D., hospital. Their names and conditions were not available Friday.
Peters was ejected from his vehicle during the collision and was airlifted to Rapid City Regional Hospital.
"We're fortunate more people weren't involved in this," Lamphere said.
