In a week set aside to recognize the plight of hunger and homelessness in South Dakota, Gov. Mike Rounds is encouraging state residents to give to those more needy than themselves.

"I encourage everyone to support organizations that are committed to providing shelter, supportive services, meals, clothing, and other supplies to individuals and families in need," Rounds said in a news release. "This is especially important during our harsh winter months."

More than 1,000 people were found to be homeless in a count conducted by the South Dakota Housing for the Homeless Consortium in 2007 throughout the state. According to a news release from the governor's office, the majority of the homeless were residing in shelters or on the street.

In the release, Rounds said that shelters and ministries that serve this population are additionally stressed this year because of unfavorable economic conditions. As examples, he noted:

  • The Cornerstone Rescue Mission in Rapid City now serves meals to an average of 400 people a day compared to 300 in years past.
  • The Banquet in Sioux Falls has also increased the number of meals provided on a daily basis. In October 2008, they served up to 13,546 meals.
