Group undertakes effort Jan. 8
The annual Fort Robinson Outbreak Spiritual Run has been set for next week. Northern Cheyenne runners travel 400 miles from Fort Robinson at Crawford, Neb., to Busby, Mont., on the Crow Reservation.
The run commemorates the Jan. 9, 1879, escape of Chief Dull Knife and his band from the fort's barracks. Dull Knife's band was escaping resettlement at Fort Reno, Okla., when they decided to return to Montana, but they were found and surrendered to officers at Fort Robinson. The group escaped, but many were killed or captured in the attempt.
The group making this year's run will leave the Lame Deer School in Montana on Tuesday, Jan. 8, stop for supper in Rapid City, and arrive at Fort Robinson that night.
They'll visit the breakout site Jan. 9 and leave for the run Jan. 10, with plans to reach Hot Springs that night for a dinner sponsored by the Dull Knife and Young Man families and the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
On Jan. 11, they'll stop for lunch at Crazy Horse Memorial, then run on to Deadwood. Dinner will be hosted by the Marilyn Pourier family and others from Rapid City.
On Jan. 12, the runners will continue from Deadwood to Belle Fourche, on Jan. 13, they'll go from Alzada, Mont., to the reservation line at Ashland and will reach Busby on Jan. 14.
