A former Oglala Sioux Tribal councilman arrested on drug charges in New Mexico is scheduled to stand trial there this month.

Don Garnier was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy to distribute marijuana, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and aiding and abetting a crime.

He and a co-defendant were arrested Sept. 19 near Raton, N.M., after law enforcement officers found 21 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of their car. Garnier said he didn't know the pot was there.

He was released and allowed to return home to Pine Ridge but his bond was revoked after he was arrested Dec. 2 in Rapid City after a bar fight.

The Oglala Sioux Tribal Council suspended Garnier after his arrest in New Mexico and he later resigned.

His trial in Albuquerque, N.M., is scheduled to start March 18.
