Rooks' murder trial moved to November

The arson, murder and sexual abuse case of a Cherry Creek man has been rescheduled for Nov. 18.

Akeem Rooks, 18, is charged in U.S. District Court with arson, two counts of second-degree murder, arson endangering human life, and aggravated sexual abuse of a child younger than 12. He is accused of intentionally setting a fire May 2 that killed his 4-year-old sister and 2-year-old brother.

Rooks' trial was originally set for June 15. Federal court documents show he has waived his right to a speedy trial. He remains in custody.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, each felony murder count carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison upon conviction. The arson charge is punishable by up to life in prison upon conviction, as is the sexual abuse charge. There is a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years in prison upon conviction.
