People interested in serving the remainder of former Ward 5 Alderman Bob Hurlbut's unexpired term have two days to file petitions to place their names on the Nov. 4 special election ballot.

So far, five people have qualified to run: Ty Ferley and Christopher Self recently turned in petitions to the city finance office, joining John M. Lundeen, Peter Schmid and Aaron Costello.

Christopher Self, 27, went to high school in White River and spent two years in the Air Force before returning to South Dakota to attend college. He is a full-time international business and pre-law student at National American University.

Ferley could not be reached for comment.

The winner will serve through July 6, 2009. Hurlbut resigned Sept. 2 shortly after his third arrest for driving under the influence.

Prospective candidates must live in Ward 5 and submit petitions bearing signatures from 50 registered Ward 5 voters to the finance office by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3.
