Russell advances in crowded District 30 House race

In area races for the state House of Representatives, Fall River State's Attorney Lance Russell and Mike Verchio, Hill City Chamber of Commerce director, emerged at the top of a five-way race for the Republican nomination for two District 30 slots on the November ballot.

District 30 includes portions of Pennington, Custer and Fall River counties.

Russell led the race with 1,511 votes, with 27 percent. Verchio received 1,132 votes.

Incumbent Mark Kirkeby and Don Kopp advance in District 35, which covers most of Rapid City. Kirkeby had 734 votes. Kopp received 655 votes.

Terry Batchelder had 310 votes in the race.

In District 33, which encompasses most of rural Pennington County, the Democratic races went to homemaker Kimberly Henderson and mechanical engineer Jeff Nelsen.

Henderson led the race with 1,024 votes to Nelsen's 894 votes and Gary Loudner's 334 votes.

Retired school teacher Jacqueline Sly captured 850 votes, and businessman Phil Jensen had 830 to win the Republican race, defeating Dale Gunderson with 553 and Ken Davis with 713.

Republicans in District 31, which includes all of Lawrence County and a portion of Butte County, gave incumbent state Rep. Charles M. Turbiville and former Spearfish Mayor Fred Romkema their support.

Romkema had 2,024 votes, and Turbiville garnered 1,946 votes.

Brandon Flanagan finished the District 31 race a distant third, with 1,163 votes.

Incumbent Thomas Brunner of Nisland and Meade County Commissioner Dean Wink of Sturgis won Republican ballot slots in District 29.

Brunner received 1,907 votes, and Wink had 1,309.

Belle Fourche minister Gail Arnold received 836 votes.

District 27 Democrats opted for Robert Fogg Jr. Fogg defeated challengers Joseph White Bear Claws, Ed Iron Cloud III and Kevin Killer for the Democratic spot on the ballot.

Eagle Butte Airport manager Dean Schrempp of Lantry was the victor in the District 28A Democratic race, defeating Richard Zacher of Eagle Butte 878 votes to 441.
