The Black Hills Symphony Orchestra will have a new face behind the baton this season. Jack Knowles, who has served as conductor/music director since 1972, has announced his intention to step down as conductor. He will continue serving as music director during the search for his replacement. The symphony also will appoint him conductor emeritus, according to a news release.

"Jack Knowles has been an integral part of the orhcestra's family for the past 36 years and has brought smiles to tens of thousands of people throughout the Black Hills region," said Paul Sedlacek, symphony president. "He has entertained, inspired and amazed us all with his dynamic conducting, steady leadership and incredible humor. Jack developed many special relationships within the community and within the orchestra that went far beyond the stage. We look forward to celebrating his legacy during the 2008-2009 season."

During the search for a conductor, Bruce Knowles, associate conductor, will lead the group. The first concert in the symphony's series is "Viva Mexico!" Oct. 18.

Before coming to Rapid City in 1969, Knowles taught instrumental music in Iowa, Oregon, Montana, California and Australia. He retired as director of bands at Central High School in 1992 after 23 years.

"I don't believe I ever thought I would actually retire as conductor," Knowles said in the release. "And now that I have made that decision, it is both difficult and exciting. I want to enjoy more time with my wonderful wife and family. My heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all of you who have enriched my life so generously with your support. I'll join those of you in the audience who have supported our community symphony for all these years."
