RAPID CITY - A recent Stevens High School graduate was named the recipient of the 2007 Zonta International Zonta Club of the Black Hills Young Women in Public Affairs Award.

Danielle A. Doran will receive her award certificate and $400 prize at the organization's July 26 meeting at noon at the Holiday Inn Rushmore Plaza.

The organization, headquartered in Chicago, is a worldwide service of executives in business and other professions working together to advance the status of women.

Her commitment to volunteering at the Rapid City Public Library and at her church, participating in the National Honor Society and other activities at Stevens High School contributed to how she earned this award, judges said.

They said an essay she wrote sealed the deal. In the essay, she discussed the importance of understanding the differences between the world's cultures; eliminating the cultural traditions of violence against girls and women; and promoting the importance of education for females.

Doran plans to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls to pursue a degree in English education with minors in French and psychology.
