Eight months after the T. Denny Sanford Foundation offered a $5 million matching grant challenge, the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation has crossed the $2 million mark.

South Dakota philanthropist T. Denny Sanford announced the matching grant to Crazy Horse in December 2007. His foundation matches funds and such gifts as heavy equipment acquired by Crazy Horse in $1 million increments.

Crazy Horse, a private, nonprofit organization honoring Native Americans, immediately matched the first million. In generating the second million, the fund drive has collectively raised $4 million.

The net result of the program will garner $10 million specifically for the mountain carving in progress.
