Hunters in the Black Hills have killed four mountain lions in the first four days of the season.

The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks says the cats were all females from about 6 months to 10 years old.

The season runs through March but will end when 35 lions or 15 females are taken, whichever happens first.

Hunters have to monitor the progress of the mountain lion totals and are required to report any kill.

About 1,600 licenses have been sold so far, which is about half of the total sold for the 2007 season. There was no season in 2008.

GF&P estimates there are 220 to 250 mountain lions in the Black Hills.

Daily updates are available on the GFP Web site or by calling 1-866-895-9067.
