Woman charged with abusing toddler

An Eagle Butte woman has been charged with abusing a 2-year-old foster child.

Wendy Lynn Edna Veit, 34, pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court to an indictment charging her with felony child abuse. Veit is accused of abusing the child between Feb. 1 and June 15. No further details were available.

The maximum penalty upon conviction of child abuse is 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine. A federal official said the child was under a "kinship placement" rather than in a typical foster home.

Veit was released into the custody of her husband and mother and ordered not to have unsupervised contact with minors.

In other federal court news:

* Craig Night Pipe, 43, and Billie Jo Ferris, 27, both of Okreek, were sentenced by U.S. District Judge Charles Kornmann to spend time in prison for drug crimes. Kornmann sentenced Night Pipe to 97 months in federal custody and four years of supervised release and ordered him to pay a $2,000 fine. Ferris was sentenced to three years in prison and three years of supervised release. Both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance, in connection with a plan to distribute methamphetamine between April 1, 2004, and Aug. 29, 2006.

* Toby Jay McCloskey Sr., 25, St. Francis, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard H. Battey to 21 months in custody and three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay $1,500 restitution for assaulting a man in Todd County. McCloskey pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

* Warren C. Floyd, 57, Mission, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon for assaulting a Mission woman in March 2006. He was originally charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. The maximum penalty is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Floyd was detained pending sentencing.

* Jonah Joshua Menard, 23, Rosebud, pleaded guilty to a charge of being a drug user in possession of a firearm. Prosecutors say the charge involves an incident that allegedly happened June 7 in Todd County. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Menard was detained pending further court proceedings.

* Ricardo Martinez, 37, Huntsville, Texas, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, distribution of a controlled substance, and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, he is accused of conspiring and distributing methamphetamine and cocaine near Rapid City between August 2005 and January 2006. Conspiracy and possession each carry a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison upon conviction, with a maximum sentence of 4 years in prison and a $2 million fine. Distribution is punishable by 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine upon conviction. No trial date was set.

* Adam C. Bordeaux, 19, Rosebud, pleaded not guilty to a six-count indictment charging him with assault with a dangerous weapon and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. He is accused of assaulting five people with a firearm in Todd County on July 5. Three of the five were younger than 18 years old. The maximum penalty upon conviction for assault is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The firearms charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, with a maximum of life in prison, plus a $250,000 fine upon conviction. Bordeaux was released to a half-way house pending further court proceedings.

* Luke Joseph Burning Breast, 23, Parmelee, pleaded not guilty to a four-count indictment charging him with being a drug user in possession of a firearm. According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, the charges relate to incidents that allegedly happened within the past three years in Todd County. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count. Burning Breast was detained pending further court proceedings.

* Martin Hart, 46, Oglala, pleaded not guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon. He is accused of eluding police officers near Oglala on June 15, ultimately crashing into a police vehicle. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. No trial date was set.
