The state Game, Fish & Parks Commission has approved the first antelope season in Custer State Park since 1984.

The season will run Oct. 13-21 and issue by drawing three any-antelope permits and 10 permits for doe or kid antelope. Only resident hunters may apply for the permits.

Park officials say the season is intended to slow the growth of the antelope herd in the 71,000-acre park. The herd has grown from around 200 animals to about 370 in recent years. Most of the antelope in the park live on or near the grasslands at the lower elevations.

The park also has seasons for elk, turkey, deer and buffalo. But it has closed a limited bighorn sheep season in recent years because of disease and declining numbers of sheep.

The any-antelope permits will cost $155, while the doe-kid permits will cost $30.
