A company currently located in California that makes aftermarket parts for motorcycles may relocate to Sturgis.

Local and company officials are not releasing much information other than to say that they would construct a new, 40,000 square-foot building in the Sturgis Industrial Park.

Sturgis City Manager David Boone said, "The company does not want to release too much information because there will be a loss of jobs at its California site."

The business would employ about 50 people initially, Boone said.

"These parts fit a number of motorcycles including Harley-Davidson and Vulcan," just to name a couple, said Boone.

"They want to move here because they want that Sturgis brand. This is just one example of how we can parlay that Sturgis brand into economic development," Boone said.

He added that while it does produce motorcycle parts, "It is not dedicated specifically to the rally."

He said local officials are working with company executives now on establishing a timeline.

"We are hoping to do it this year (with the agreement). Construction is going to take some time with a 40,000-square-foot building. We hope to complete construction in 2009. Everyone is looking at the business being in operation in 2010," Boone said.

He said the city is continuing to work on enticing retail businesses to the community.

"We are working with the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce on the Sturgis Area Retail Attraction Initiative. We want to match potential retailers to the sites we have available," Boone said.

The retail attraction initiative was part of the agreement the city recently signed with the chamber.
