Rapid City schools superintendent Peter Wharton has named four people who he will recommend for top administrative posts with the school district, including new principals for Central and Stevens high schools.
They are John Julius, for Stevens High School principal; Mike Talley, Central High School principal; Susie Roth, director of staff development services; and Jim Ghents, director of curriculum, assessment, instruction and gifted services.
Roth, Ghents and Julius are currently district employees. Talley is from out of state.
Roth is a principal on special assignment, working with grants and staff development, according to Wharton.
She has 11 years of teaching experience and 17 years of administrative experience. She recently completed her doctoral program in educational administration and serves as an instructor and adviser for three South Dakota universities.
She has been extensively involved with staff development initiatives in Rapid City Area Schools and has strong experience in leadership training and professional development, according to a news release from Wharton's office.
Ghents is assistant principal at Central High School. He has more than 10 years of experience as a teacher, dean of students and assistant principal.
He is working on his doctoral program in educational administration through the University of South Dakota. Ghents has a strong background in leadership, project management and strategic planning, according to Wharton.
Julius is the assistant principal at Stevens. He has more than 19 years of experience with Rapid City Area Schools working as a teacher, instructional leader, coach and administrator. He has a master's degree in educational administration from South Dakota State University. Julius has been involved in professional development, safe schools and improving student achievement, according to the release.
Talley, a principal in North Dakota, has more than five years of teaching experience and six years administrative experience as a high school principal. He has a master's degree in education with an emphasis in school administration. Talley has a strong background in high school management, data-driven decision-making and strategic planning, according to the news release.
The four recommendations will be submitted to the school board for approval at the board's regular meeting on June 7.
