The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for late today through Thursday evening for the Black Hills.

The forecast says rain might mix with snow in western South Dakota tonight, with the higher elevations in the northern Black Hills possibly getting as much as 6 inches of snow on Thursday. In addition to the snow, high winds are expected to whip through the region as well.

John Wetenkamp, a Weather Service meteorologist in Rapid City, says the ground could be white on Terry Peak and in the Lead and Deadwood areas.
