Authorities in Spearfish say a mountain lion they were tracking Tuesday morning has apparently left city limits.

According to a news release from the Spearfish City Police Department, police joined with state Game, Fish & Parks officials in responding to a report of lion tracks in fresh snow along Spearfish Creek near Salem Park in an area northeast of Lyle Hare Stadium on the campus of Black Hills State University.

"The department confirmed the tracks to be lion tracks," the news release said. "The department worked with the local GF&P staff to track the lion and confirm that it had left the city."

Spearfish police said that the lion was tracked to ensure it didn't remain in the city and that there is no indication that the lion's behavior is a problem for the community.
