Lightning sparks multiple fires throughout Hills

RAPID CITY - A lightning strike fire in Fall River County burned 75 acres on private land Friday evening, according to a news release from the Northern Great Plains Fire Information Center.
The Maitland Fire was contained, and no structures were threatened.
The fire was eight miles west of U.S. Highway 385 of Maitland Road. Volunteer fire departments from Cascade, Olrich, Hot Springs, Oral, Minnekahta and Smithwick responded.
Also, six small fires in the Black Hills Fire Protection District burned a total of 6 acres since Thursday.
The fires ranged in size from 1/10 of an acre to 3 acres. Officials from the U.S. Forest Service, the State of South Dakota and local volunteer fire departments responded. All the fires have been contained and controlled.
