State Rep. Jim Bradford of Pine Ridge has requested a recount in his bid to win the Democratic nomination for the state Senate in last week's primary election.

Bradford acknowledged Wednesday that he's doubtful the recount will change the outcome of his race against state Sen. Theresa Two Bulls of Pine Ridge. But he said the 28-vote loss was so close that he felt obligated to ask for a recount.

"I've got nothing to lose," the term-limited representative said. "I'm the guy that's behind."

Bradford and Two Bulls, who is a tribal prosecutor, serve Legislative District 27, which includes Shannon, Bennett, Jackson and Haakon counties.

Although Bradford could not run for re-election to the House because of eight-year legislative term limits, he could seek a seat in the state Senate.

State Election Supervisor Kea Warne said a judge will appoint recount boards in each county to recheck election records.

Warne said Tuesday's state election canvass showed Bradford losing by 1,183 to 1,155 to Two Bulls.

One other legislative race qualifies for a recount, Warne said.

In the Legislative District 18 House race for the Republican nomination in Yankton County, Lee Rettig lost by three votes to Dan Rupiper, Warne said.

Two candidates in the four-person race advance to the November general election.

Getting the most votes in the GOP primary was Nick Moser, with 979 votes. Rupiper had 542 votes, Rettig had 539 and Michelle Rook had 343 votes.

Rettig said earlier that he would not request a recount.
