RAPID CITY - A fire in the Rapid City Journal press plant Wednesday morning forced between 30 and 35 employees to evacuate the building but caused no major injuries or damage, according to Mark Gibbens, production director for the Journal.

The fire was quickly extinguished by employees and firefighters with the Rapid City fire department, and employees were able to return to work in the building by 11:30 a.m.

The fire will not affect the Journal's ability to publish, Gibbens said.

No official cause had been determined by Wednesday afternoon, according to fire battalion chief Rob Powell.

No one was injured, although two employees were being evaluated for smoke inhalation.

The fire was reported about 9:30 a.m., and some employees fought the blaze initially with fire extinguishers, according to Capt. Mark Kirchgesler, fire department public information officer.

Several units from the fire department responded, and the fire was out within about 10 minutes.

Gibbens said the fire started in a return air duct in the pressroom and was confined to the ventilation system.

He said there was minor water damage to some paper in the paper storage area.

Gibbens said at noon that crews would have to reset smoke and heat detectors before work could resume, but he expected crews to be printing some commercial work by Wednesday afternoon.
