Crazy Horse celebrates 60 years with open house
For the second time in recent weeks, the Black Hills was back in the limelight of morning television.
NBC's "Today" show broadcast a segment Monday featuring the popular Crazy Horse Memorial. Ann Curry reporting suspended in the air on the face of the enormous rock carving.
"I want to tell you about this amazing sculpture," she said, hanging off the mountain in rappelling gear. "It's been 60 years in the making thanks to a tough breed of people. Take a look at their story."
She then told the story of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and his large family, many of whom still work on the monument today.
"This landmark stands as a testament to the spirit of all American Indians," Curry said.
On May 9, "Good Morning America" on ABC did a feature on Mount Rushmore and the Badlands.
The television exposure comes as Crazy Horse celebrates its 60th anniversary.
Its annual Memorial Day weekend open house is planned for Saturday to Monday.
A preview of the "Legends in Light" laser show is planned for Friday night. The show tells the story of Native Americans and will be presented nightly through Native American Day on Oct. 13.
Residents from South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Nebraska will be admitted for free to the memorial Saturday, Sunday and Monday with a donation of three cans of food per person. The cans will benefit the KOTA Care and Share Food Drive.
Visitors will experience a blast exploding on the mountain carving at 11 a.m. Monday, weather permitting.
June 3 marks 60 years since the first blast on the mountain. There will be a program that day at 10 a.m. and a double blast at 11 a.m.
Crazy Horse is a nonprofit, educational and cultural project honoring Native Americans. The colossal mountain carving will be 641 feet long by 563 feet high and is being carved three-dimensionally in the round.
