A number of fires occurred Sunday in the Black Hills area and Wyoming, according to a report from the Northern Great Plains Joint Information Center.
- A 350-acre grass fire, called the Hawks Fire, broke out on private land off Highway 34 south of Plainville.
Two single engine air tankers were deployed to fight the fire. The state of South Dakota and a number of volunteer fire departments assisted Meade County in responding to the fire. The cause and containment levels are unknown.
- A grass fire started early Sunday afternoon on Mile Marker 41 on Interstate 90. It was contained at one-tenth of an acre. Two state engines responded. The fire, called the Mediam Fire, was human caused.
- A 5.5-acre timber and grass fire occurred 10 miles northwest of Sundance, Wyo., according to the information center. The fire was caused by lightning. Two hand crews and three Forest Service engines responded to the fire, which was contained Sunday afternoon. It was called the Rock Fire.
- The Mona Fire broke out in the Harding Gulch area near East Alva, Wyo. It was caused by lightning. A Black Hills National Forest engine and North Zone hand crew were able to contain the fire at five acres.
- A 1.5-acre fire occurred three miles north of Beulah, Wyo., Sunday afternoon and has since been contained. The cause of the fire, called the Reily Anchor Fire, is unknown. The Beulah Volunteer Fire Department and state resources responded to the blaze.
- The Heinart Fire broke out in the Bear Lodge Mountains on Black Hills National Forest land. So far, it has burned three acres. Two Forest Service engines, an Air Attack plane, one helicopter and two single engine air tankers responded to the fire Sunday. It was caused by lightning.
- Another lightning-caused fire started in the Bear Lodge Mountains near the Rock and Heinart Fires. The size and containment levels were not available. One Forest Service engine responded to the fire, called the Fish Windmill Fire.
