Rose Dearellano

Callie Schmidt, Journal correspondent

Rose Dearellano came from San Francisco for the 77th Sturgis motorcycle rally. On Tuesday morning, as she parked her bike on Main Street in Deadwood, she felt bittersweet.

She and her husband were planning to leave Wednesday, so Tuesday was their day to say goodbye.

They and their group of 13 friends came out on July 27 to ride the Black Hills before it got too crowded. Dearellano has been coming to the rally since 2000.

Dearellano, 56, said she likes the rally for the people-watching – not to mention the chance to be with friends.

In her past 17 years at the rally, the weather has made things interesting, Dearellano said. She said hail has even killed some bikers.

But in the end, she comes back for the riding and the friends.

"After so many years, (you) just get to know people," she said.
