When Larry Covington of Mount Vernon, Iowa, tours on his Kawasaki Nomad, he carries tributes to his own firefighting days and to brethren lost in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Images on the bike include the Statue of Liberty, remnants of the World Trade Center, New York firefighters raising the American flag, a firefighter entering a building, and a shot of a firetruck from his own stationhouse in east-central Iowa.
He also carries a replica badge from the station flanked by smaller recreations of his own badge and that of his father. The bike was painted by local artist, Travis Allen of Lisbon, Iowa.
“He personalized it for me,” Covington said.
Covington brought his lady friend, Pam Walz, to the Black Hills 17 years ago. They haven’t missed a year since.
“I was out here in the mid-'80s and hadn’t been back until 2000. We started all over again,” Covington said.
