It's a date most kids, parents and guardians already know.

School for most youngsters in the Belle Fourche School District will open Monday, Aug. 19.

It's the first day of school for grades 9 through 12 at Belle Fourche High school.

Classes at Belle Fourche Middle School, grades 5 through 8, run through the morning with dismissal at noon. There's a parent open house in the afternoon.

Elementary grades, kindergarten through fourth grade, will only be headed to school Monday if they go to open house programs in the afternoon with their parents.

Classes for the kindergarten through fourth grade students begin Tuesday, Aug. 20 at North Park and South Park schools.

The busses will be running.

There's no school on the long Labor Day weekend Aug. 3 through Sept. 2, but students at all of the schools will be making preparations for Homecoming that comes early this year on Friday, Sept. 13.

The school's calendar is on line again this year at

The district continues its flexible weekly schedule this year with intersession days most Fridays instead of regular classes.

The intersession concept allows students in extra curricular activities to not miss Friday classes while traveling to distant competition or meetings. It also offers extra study opportunities for students who need extra help in their classroom work.

At Monday's Belle Fourche school board meeting, board members were told by administrators that the faculty and staff at schools were ready and awaiting their first days of school.
