New Bronc Purple club shirts, their annual fundraiser March 8 - and a 2013 state championship to defend - are all part of a growing enthusiasm for this year's Belle Fourche High School Rodeo Club members.

The club's annual fundraiser opens with dinner at 5:30 p.m. March 8 at the Branding Iron Steakhouse Social Club; the annual student work and crafts auction follows. The event is open to the public.

The fundraiser auctions a day's work by each of the club members as well as a craft item from each member. The cash raised is used for training and travel costs for the 30-plus members of the high school rodeo club depending on their levels of activity.

High school rodeo is recognized by many high schools as a club activity, but South Dakota's official state sport is not an authorized South Dakota High School Activities Association activity. It is governed by the South Dakota High School Rodeo Association.

Students are required by the SDHSRA to meet the same academic and other requirements as the state activities association and all high schools in the state.

Belle Fourche is host for the SDHSRA Finals Rodeo at the end of June.

This year the 2013 team trophy owned by the Belle Fourche club will be up for grabs - and the team members say they will work hard to bring it back to Belle Fourche again.

The new team uniform shirts in Bronc Purple were sponsored by four businesses with Belle Fourche ties, according to Maclyn Hauck who arranged the sponsorship and embroidered uniform information including competitor names.

Club officers include president Fehrin Ward, vice president Brooke Howell, secretary Alix Thorstenson and treasurer Jade Nixon.

This year's club advisor is Rex Lamphere.
