Newell's Delaney Leber was first across the finish line in the girls 5K in 21:06.68 at the Belle Fourche Invitational Cross Country Meet Thursday at Belle Fourche Golf Course.

"I felt pretty good today, although I prefer cooler temperature," said Leber. "I think we're all ahead of our normal schedule. Our goal is to win state (B)."

"Delaney has been ill and sore the last couple of weeks," said Newell coach Kyle Sanderson. "She ran unbelievable and looked fresh."

St Thomas More topped the varsity girls’ team standings with 24 points. Sturgis Brown collected 40 points. Newell captured fourth place with 46 points. Belle Fourche finished seventh with 107.

Custer won the varsity boys title with 26 points. Sturgis Brown runner-up honors with 48. Belle Fourche was fifth with 96.

Daniel Burkhalter of Bison won the boys’ 5K run in a time of 16:44.63.

Sawyer Clarkson, Belle, competing in his first 5k race, took sixth place in 18:42.08.

"It went very well," said Belle Fourche coach Chris Riley. "Sawyer, Austin Olson and Cole Hockenbary ran really well. Hayley Wilbur was fifteenth in the girls’ race."

Newell hosts its first-ever home cross country meet at the Newell Golf Course Friday. "We're excited about having our first home cross country meet," said Sanderson.
