There will be no Belle Fourche city council or school board election this April.
For the city council, four seats came open, but only three petitions were filed. For the Belle Fourche school district, two seats came open and two people filed for them.
That means the city and school election has been cancelled and people who filed for the seats will automatically be elected to the positions.
For the city council two incumbents filed for their seats, including Larry Schuldies in Ward 1, Karen Wagner in Ward 3. In Ward 4, former council member Frances Hays was the only person filing for a seat.
In Ward 2, no petitions were filed, so incumbent Greg Raisanen will retain his seat. Raisanen could resign when the new council members are seated, and a special election could be called in the ward, or he could hold the seat all or part of the two-year term.
Two school board seats came vacant this year. Incumbent Mike Day filed to retain his seat. Bev Banks did not file to return to the board. Former board member Kim Brill did file a petition. Day and Brill will be seated on the board.
Both city and school offices noted that because each of the candidates is unopposed, certificates of election will be issued in the same way as to successful candidates after an election.
