BOX ELDER | Douglas High School administrators notified parents Tuesday that a rumor about bed bugs at the school was overblown and the situation had been addressed.

Douglas High School principal Bud Gusso said a single bed bug was discovered on one child. The bug was destroyed, the child sent home and the classroom sterilized.

"We haven't seen a bug since," he said.

Gusso said talk of the bug spread on social media sites such as Facebook, prompting the school to reassure parents that it was one bug and not an outbreak.

"It was not as big a deal as the rumor," he said.

Bed bugs have become an issue in schools across the country, including in New York and Michigan. While South Dakota has had outbreaks in hotels, no outbreaks have been widely reported in schools.
