There are two educational opportunities for area agricultural producers in the coming weeks.
The first is a forage crop field day this Friday at 10 a.m. at Plum Thicket Farms southeast of Gordon.
A forage crop research project, sponsored by Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition, will be showcased and discussed along with paddock grazed forage sorghum, water systems for paddock grazing and fall cocktails planted after wheat harvest. The tour should conclude around noon.
Directions to tour from Gordon:
4 miles South on Highway 27.
Turn East on 610 Road.
Follow 610 Rd East for 3 miles. Road will Turn S for one mile, and then turn east again.
Road is now 600th Rd. Continue another 2 miles East.
Turn South at 150 Lane. Travel South 1/2 mile. Tour start location will be on east Side of Road at the South End of windbreak.
The second opportunitiy will be Nov. 14, when the Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition and Nebraska Extension Traveling Roadshow will be in Chadron.
The Roadshow will stop at the Chadron State College Student Center from 5-9 p.m. for the annual Traveling Roadshow featuring Dr. Dan Thomson, DVM, third-generation bovine veterinarian and host of the nationally aired veterinary television show “Doc Talk,” now in its seventh season on RFD TV.
Dr. Dan Thomson’s presentation titled “The U.S. Beef Cattle Production Journey: The Destination Is Up To Us” will cover topics including:
· Understanding the One Beef concept and beef retailer objectives
· How communication between segments can improve profitability
· Future trends in beef cattle health and well-being management
· Preparing cattle for a change of address
The event is $15 to cover the cost of the meal. The Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition (NGLC) will pick up the cost of all student registrations. Pre-registration is required by by Nov. 7 to reserve a meal. To pre-register, call Jack Arterburn at the Dawes County Extension office 308-432-3373.
