A Mass of Christian Burial took place Dec. 9, 2017 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hastings with Father Stephen Graeve officiating. Burial with military rites by the Hastings Veterans Organizations was in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Memorials may be given to the Steve Stewart Memorial Fund. Steve was born July 23, 1953, in Chadron to William and Barbara (Montague) Stewart. In 1971, he graduated from Assumption High School in Chadron and attended Hastings College and Central Community College. Steve served in the U.S. Air Force from Sept. 10, 1971, until Sept. 9, 1975. Steve married the love of his life, Cathy L. Camby, with whom he celebrated 42 years of marriage on June 7. They moved from Omaha to Hastings in 1976.

Steve was a police officer for the Hastings Police for eight years, president of the Hastings Fire Department Reserves for 10 years, and a paralegal for the Adams County Attorney’s Office for 17 years. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Hastings Fire Department Reserves and the American Legion. There was no greater joy in Steve’s life than his eight grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as Poppo. Steve rarely missed their events and loved showing them off. He was very dedicated to serving the public, especially through the Hastings Fire Department Reserves.
