A South Dakota man was killed and a woman injured in a Sheridan County vehicle accident south of Whiteclay.
Francis Ray Rencountre, 46, died when the vehicle he was driving went off a bridge into a ravine and rolled last Thursday, according to a press release from the Sheridan County Attorney’s Office. A female passenger was injured and transported to a hospital in South Dakota for treatment.
The Nebraska State Patrol investigated the accident and said alcohol was a factor in the crash, which occurred on 325th Trail. Rencountre was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck, an NSP press release says.
The NSP completed a special enforcement effort in Sheridan County Friday. Troopers removed two impaired drivers from the road during the six-week enforcement and made five arrests for misdemeanor drug possession. The special enforcement also resulted citations and warnings for speeding (215), driving under suspension (2), no proof of insurance (1), open container (1) and no seat belt (7). They also assisted five motorists.
The special enforcement was made possible in part by a $12,375 grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
