Chadron State junior Brock Thumm of Watervliet, Mich., continued his winning ways during the Viking-Warrior Open Wrestling Tournament on Dec. 30 at Midland University in Fremont.

Thumm decisioned two Nebraska-Kearney entries while winning the 141-pound weight class.

Thumm has now won 13 of his last 14 matches and is 13-4 for the season. He definitely closed out the Old Year in style. In mid-December during the Eagles’ final competition before Christmas, he won all five of his matches at the Doane Tourney in Crete.

The CSC honor student initially decisioned Jonathan Killingsworth of Nebraska-Kearney 6-4, then pinned CSC freshman Joe Ritzen before defeating another Loper, Tevin Briscoe, 8-4 by getting back points in overtime for the 141-pound top honors.

Ritzen, who normally competes at 133 pounds, and is redshirting this season.

The Eagles also received an impressive performance from freshman Devin Stork of Canton, S.D., at 184 pounds. Ethan Leighton of NAIA power Grandview College in Iowa pinned Stork in just 55 seconds in the opening round. However, Stork then pinned another Grandview grappler, Sam Gregory, in 4:25 and avenged his earlier loss by pinning Leighton in 6:08 in his third bout.

Three more CSC entries finished 2-2 at their weight classes. They are 133-pounders Brandon Kile of Hastings, a junior, and Chance Karst of Powell, Wyo., a redshirt freshman, along with heavyweight Rulon Taylor of Curtis, Neb., also a junior.

Not as many teams entered the Viking-Warrior Open this year as were there a year ago, when at least 30 teams participated, but the competition was still tough. Besides Kearney and Grandview, the Augustana Vikings from Sioux Falls had a full lineup.

The Eagles will enter the Cusatis Open at Hastings College this weekend and make their home debut in a dual with Colorado Mines on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m.
