Five Chadron State wrestlers placed at the Holiday Inn Open Tournament hosted by Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday.
Nearly 800 wrestlers entered the tourney, according to the UNK website. Sixteen mats were used.
The Eagles highest placing was by redshirt freshman Jacob DeSersa of Hot Springs. This was his collegiate debut and he finished second in the Amateur Division’s 133-pound weight class. He posted two pins and a major decision while winning his first four matches before losing to Gavin Malendez of Colorado State-Pueblo 9-5 in the finals.
Caleb Haskell, a redshirt freshman from Madison, Neb., was fourth in the Amateur Division at 149 pounds with a 3-2 record. One of his losses was to Malendez 6-3.
CSC junior Brock Thumm of Watervliet, Mich., took third at 141 pounds in the Elite Division. He lost his opening match to Jonathan Killingsworth of Nebraska-Kearney 4-3, then reeled off five straight wins, including a 9-8 decision over Killingworth. Thumm won his final match 14-1 to claim third place
Another, CSC entry, Josh Miller, finished sixth in the 141 Elite bracket.
Redshirt freshman Chance Karst of Powell, Wyo., could have competed in the Amateur Division, but chose to enter the Elite bracket and placed fourth at 133 pounds with a 4-2 record. Both of his losses were to Drake Foster of the University of Wyoming, who had a 22-8 record as the Cowboys’ varsity wrestler two years ago. Karst pinned three of his victims and had a major decision over the fourth.
Chadron freshman Joe Ritzen, the 133-pound champion at the Cowboy Open two weeks ago, went 4-2 at Kearney. He posted a technical fall and three major decisions during his four victories.
The Eagles will be idle until opening their RMAC schedule by visiting Western State and Colorado Mesa for duals on Dec. 1 and 2 and also entering the Mesa Open Tourney on Dec. 3.
