Chadron High volleyball coach Blakelee Hoffman picked up her first win as head coach, and Hay Springs started the season 2-1 while Crawford fell to 0-1 with the beginning of the 2017 volleyball season.
Hoffman’s Lady Cardinals scored a victory over Gordon-Rushville in a three-set sweep, 25-14, 25-14, 25-13.
Allie Ferguson dominated at the net for the Cards, drilling out 12 kills. She was closely matched by Shea Bailey’s 10. Setter Tyleigh Strotheide had 25 assists on the night, and as a team the Cardinals had four blocks and 10 ace serves. They also played well on defense, with a picking up serve receive passes 96 percent of the time.
Chadron was scheculed to play in Alliance Tuesday and will host Gering at 6 p.m. Thursday before heading to Sidney for triangular action Sept. 12.
The Hay Springs Hawks picked up wins against South Platte and McPherson County but dropped a game to Hyannis in their opening three stands of the season.
Hay Springs opened the year with a quick loss to Hyannis at the Longhorns’ triangular Aug. 31. The Longhorns made a big impression on the Hawks with a 25-13, 25-9 sweep before Hay Springs claimed their first season win over McPherson County. The Hawks won in two, 25-19, 25-20.
The Hawks added a ‘W’ with a hard-fought, five-set matchup against South Platte at home Sept. 1. Hay Springs took the opening set 25-20 before dropping the next two 19-25 each. The Hawks managed to hold off South Platte in a 25-21 fourth set and beat the Knights to 15 in the 15-10 conclusion for the victory.
The Crawford Lady Rams traveled to Lusk, Wyo., Aug. 31 for their season opener. Niobrara County easily swept the Rams, sending them home on the losing side of 25-15, 25-8, 25-11 sets.
Crawford will host Morrill Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m. and then head to the Gordon-Rushville Invite the next day. Hay Springs was set to host triangulars Sept. 5 and 7 at 5 p.m. and 4 p.m. before playing at Cody-Kilgore Sept. 8 and at the Gordon-Rushville Invite Sept. 9.
Sioux County’s volleyball season will get underway this weekend as well. The Warriors will be in Hyannis Friday, at Banner County Saturday and in Minatare next Tuesday.
